FAQs
For art inquiries, commissions, and support:
What is this?
“Big Fly Big Fish” is a collection of art assemblages by artist and angler Kevin Byrd, based in San Francisco. The body of work explores traditional fly tying techniques at an exaggerated scale by using large fish hooks and household items, repurposed and reimagined into artistic lures.
What are the flies made of?
The flies are composed of old cables, cords, electronic refuse, and other household materials like zip ties and broom bristles.
How big are they?
Big. They range in size, but the average length is 12”, with a height of 10” and a width around 5”.
How long does it take to make one?
Each fly takes about a day, including 1-2 hours tying the fly. View a time-lapse that shows the process.
What type of hooks are these?
Shark hooks sized 20/0. These are the biggest fishing hooks that are available.
Do you fly fish?
Yes. I was introduced to fly fishing by my father-in-law Gregg about twenty years ago. I’ve been fortunate to travel and fish in some amazing locations, primarily fishing for trout.
How long does it take to ship?
Items are shipped within 5 business days of purchase. Shipping time depends on distance from San Francisco, but generally takes 3-5 days when shipped in the continental U.S.
Do you ship internationally?
I currently ship artwork purchased on this website only to customers in the United States. I’m happy to ship internationally to suit your needs. Please contact me directly here to make arrangements: info@kevinbyrd.com
How do you assemble the wood base?
When shipped, the wood base and fly will be separate and is easy to assemble. Refer to the assembly instructions here. The wood base has a channel cut out that the hook sits in. It’s held snug by the channel and high powered magnets.
What is the wood base made of?
Mahogany, sourced from sustainable forests in South America.
